Engine 2 Diet

Over the past several years I've struggled with weight.  There were times when I would get very depressed because I was so unhappy with it.  My eating habits have changed drastically since I first started working at Whole Foods Market.  Even with the change in my diet, I didn't lose any weight.  I grew up being pretty active, and I knew I had to exercise along with eating right.  At the beginning of this year I set out to be healthier, and to date have lost 25 pounds through better eating and exercise.

Now onto the diet I was on for the last 4 weeks... The Engine 2 Diet.  One sentence synopsis of the book:  Eating a plant-based diet will lower your cholesterol and help you live a healthier life.

It is low fat plant-based (vegan) diet.  I don't like trying diets that I know I can't make a lifestyle change with since I know I'll gain more weight back after the diet's over.  I wasn't sure if I could make a lifelong commitment to this diet since it involves no animal-based products and cutting out as much oil and fat as possible.  Your choices are seriously limited when you go out.  At least in Austin there are many restaurants that offer vegetarian and even vegan options.  Also, it was easier for me to stay on this diet since I work at Whole Foods Market and our landmark store is right underneath me.  :)  Although I didn't think I would make a lifelong commitment, I decided to try for the following reasons:

1.  I would at least cleanse/detox my system by the end of the 28 days.
2.  I wanted to see if I could really not eat animal-based products for 28 days.

Overall, I feel cleaner and lighter and know that I don't HAVE to eat meat with every meal.  I also leaned on the pre-hypertension side of blood pressure, but now my blood pressure has dramatically decreased.  I wished I check my cholesterol levels before the diet began, but I didn't get a chance to get it done.  I don't think I would stick 100% to the diet, but I do have a different perspective on the foods that I eat and how it may affect the health of my body.  I'm glad I did it and I will definitely be making healthier choices.  Going forward, I will probably cutout dairy as much as possible and stay with leaner meat options (except for special occasions of course :)).

I didn't want to bore you with any long texts, but it looks like this post is already really wordy.  If you've made it this far and have any questions or would like more information just leave me a comment and I'll contact you.  :)  Thanks for reading!

I'll follow your great change in your diet! Sometimes, I want to make these changes also opt for organic foods and become vegetarian. But first I need to find time to dedicate myself to this ...
Good health to you!!!

Go you! It sounds like you've made big strides towards a healthy lifestyle and weight loss. I'm a vegetarian and am so because while I tried being vegan I was hungry ALL THE TIME. I found that I was eating peanut butter like yogurt just so that I wouldn't be ravenous every two hours. Did the Engine 2 diet keep your tummy satisfied?

I wish you much success with your diet. I'll be following along to see how you do. =) I'm contemplating going vegetarian myself for various health issues that I've had in the past. There are too many hormones in the meat that we eat. My husband is in the middle of reading the book Eating Animals, and has talked about going vegetarian for a while now. He hasn't had any meat for over a week now. Since last Wednesday I've had meat twice, but that's because I didn't want food that was already cooked to go to waste in our refrigerator.

@Eliana - Thanks! It does require time and being very conscious of what you eat. At first, I didn't know what to eat and just ate random vegetables. But once you set out to do it, it become easier. :)

@meli88a - Thanks! I would get hungry, but I dont know if it would've been worse on this diet if I was working out more consistently. (I only went running twice on this diet and no weight training.) Even before I went on the Engine 2 Diet (E2 diet) I ate pretty often... probably around 5-6 times a day. It wasn't any different with this diet. I ended up eating a lot of fresh fruit, vegetables and Larabars in between my meals. I also have the luxury and convenience of going downstairs during work and grabbing something to eat at Whole Foods, which made it a lot easier. If you want to try it out, there is a E2 website where you can get his recipes, but to be honest I really only tried a couple of them.

@Andrea - Thanks! Very true about the hormones. I am an employee of Whole Foods and of course if you do eat meat I would recommend getting our meat. :) To be honest, even if I wasn't an employee I would only get WF's meat with what I know now. Good luck!

@Eugenia - Thanks! I do. I gained about 4 pounds after my anniversary dinner, but was able to loose it again this week after eating better. I didn't feel my best on Monday after the dinner either... but I dont know if that was the food or if it was in my head. (I'm not saying that the food was bad, but I just hadn't had any meat or anything that heavy in a long time.) :)

I guess I'm officially ovo-lacto pescatarian, but have considered going vegan myself the past few months. My husband, who has struggled with his weight, talked with me about this diet last month and I was thinking maybe we would make this move together. I would have to eat a lot of nuts and avocado to feel full, though. Guess there's nothing wrong with that, necessarily. :) Glad you are feeling better.
